Talk Therapy and Crisis Intervention for Serious Illnesses
For patients who are confronted with illnesses that question or even destroy their own way of life, perspectives, hopes and dreams, talking to a person they trust is of central importance.
This can include both severe acute or
chronic illnesses,
autoimmune diseases
or
cancer
, but also illnesses that turn your life upside down.
The need to talk is central for most patients and yet it often remains unsatisfied – be it because the treating doctor has no time, you don’t want to burden your own friends or family, you have the feeling of disturbing or you simply can’t find the words yourself.
Through conversation, however, processing is possible, clarification can take place, new horizons often open up and perspectives can change. The conversation relieves and can give courage. Whoever can talk is not alone.
However, conversation is also necessary to understand – your own illness, the necessary therapeutic measures, possible options and alternatives. Information can relieve, provide orientation and counteract the feeling of helplessness.
In this respect, in addition to emotional relief, the conversation is always about understanding, comprehending and orientation.
What is and What Can Talk Therapy Do?
In talk therapy, the focus should be on the patients with their current needs, problems and worries. This therapy is not about working through something from the past.
It is not about treating mental disorders. Understanding and accepting the current worries and needs themselves, discovering and developing one’s own resources and opening up one’s own paths is the goal of this therapy.
Acceptance, empathy and appreciation are the basic attitudes in this therapeutic relationship.
As part of our therapy, we also regularly offer exercises to reduce stress and learn techniques for doing so.
Since the reduction of emotional and psychological stress always has a positive effect on bodily functions and the immune system, this is part of our concept for strengthening self-healing powers.
All forms of relaxation exercises, meditation, trance journeys or Reiki are suitable for this. For others it is more like singing, painting or running. Here, too, it is important to find your own way.
Ways out of the Crisis
When life-threatening illnesses are communicated, in the event of therapy setbacks and in many other situations when one’s own health is threatened, people reach their limits – experience emotional crises.
But relatives, friends and family are also often overwhelmed in such situations.
Patients in such situations often have the feeling of not knowing what to do, feel overwhelmed or unstable or experience helplessness and fear, even panic attacks. Suicidal thoughts also arise in such situations as a way out of a seemingly hopeless situation.
In such emotional emergencies, quick help, talk therapy and crisis intervention are important.
The aim of our crisis intervention is short-term stabilization, prevention of possible negative consequences and the search for ways out of the crisis.
Within the framework of our consultation hours, crisis interventions always take priority and patients are not put off by us. Please do not hesitate to call us.
